Can’t Be Tamed? Wildcats, Hawkeyes Stay Undefeated
National stage statements continue in field hockey
The Big Ten continues to assert itself on the field hockey pitch, with No. 1 Northwestern and No. 2 Iowa dispatching of two more top-20 opponents in No. 14 Louisville and No. 16 Miami (OH). Check it out.
Poised attack tallies two more in Iowa’s win column
First up on Friday, the Hawkeyes surrendered a goal to the RedHawks and wouldn’t score until midway through the final quarter. But Iowa stayed patient, and sophomore Téa Fortpied broke through in the 51st minute before Dionne van Aalsum buried her eighth goal of the season for the game-winner.
Sunday was a different story; Iowa scored first and countered every punch the Cardinals threw, with braces from van Aalsum and two-time reigning Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week Frederique van Cleef making the difference. Get more from the Hawkeyes .
Boon’s Goalkeeping Keeps ‘Cats Rolling
Northwestern led off its weekend with a wire-to-wire, 3-1 win over Louisville, courtesy of a career-high seven saves from goalkeeper Juliana Boon. First-year Kiera Sack kickstarted the offense with her first career goal less than six minutes into the game, and a penalty conversion from Sol Martinez combined with Isle Tromp’s fourth goal of the season ultimately put the ‘Cats out of reach.
Just two days later, Boon tied that personal best with another seven stops against Miami (OH) on the Wildcats’ way to a 2-0 win. After a scoreless first period, Northwestern unleashed a 10-shot barrage in the second when Olivia Bent-Cole found the back of the net. She’d go on to record an assist on Bree Moffett’s goal after halftime while Boon’s fourth shutout of the season locked in Northwestern’s sixth straight win. Read more from Evanston .
Conference Play Coming Next
While upset bids fell short for No. 17 Rutgers and Penn State, No. 7 Maryland’s Jordyn Hollamon had a hat trick as the Terps improved to 6-0, and Ohio State secured its third consecutive win.
