Late-game goals and lockdown defenses lift Indiana, Maryland, and Northwestern to key wins
With conference play picking up, a handful of Big Ten Field Hockey teams have asserted themselves as national contenders after upsets, top-5 clashes, and clutch goals in close games. Take a look at all the top weekend action.
Hoosiers halt No. 2 Hawkeyes
Going into the weekend, No. 2 Iowa had outscored its last four opponents 23-3 behind NFHCA Division I Offensive Player of the Week Dionne van Aalsum (10 goals), part of a perfect 6-0 start. But after four consecutive wins, the Hoosiers brought momentum of their own into Iowa City.
On Friday, Indiana rallied behind balanced offense and gritty defense en route to a 3-1 road stunner. Three different Hoosiers found the back of the cage, while the back line held the powerhouse Hawkeyes scoreless until the fourth quarter and to their lowest goal total this season. Javi Baeza buried her first goal of the season just three minutes in before Celia Arroyo Cabezudo (six goals) and Molly Stutte (seven goals) cushioned the lead to secure the upset. It looked like Iowa had a bounce-back victory in hand with just over two minutes remaining in Sunday’s non-conference contest. But the Hoosiers scrapped for a takeaway within the offensive arc, connected a couple passes, and a diving shot from Theresa Ricci forced overtime. The Hawkeyes ultimately closed out an epic 2-1 shootout victory, but the Hoosiers had already made their statement.
“[Indiana’s] a really good team,” Iowa coach Lisa Cellucci said . “They're going to make some noise in the Big Ten and nationally.”
Terps edge out Wake Forest in top-five nail-biter
In one of the most evenly matched contests so far this field hockey season, No. 5 Maryland and No. 4 Wake Forest battled with a blank scoreboard deep into the fourth quarter in College Park. Both teams had six saves, 11 shots, and a flawless zero fouls heading into the game’s waning minutes. Just when the bout looked overtime bound, senior forward Maci Bradford broke through, burying a penalty corner in the 56th minute , the Terps’ one extra chance making all the difference.
Senior keeper Alyssa Klebasko’s first top-five shutout led Maryland to its highest ranked win in three years and their first 8-0 start since 2018. There’s a long way to go in Big Ten play, but the Terps have more than made their case for title contention... Get more from Maryland.
‘Cats come up clutch on the West Coast
No. 1 Northwestern’s meeting with No. 18 Cal was scoreless until the fourth quarter. But the Wildcats' 23-shot offensive barrage wore down the Bears’ defense, with Kerry McCormick finding the back of the cage in the 49th minute before Ilse Tromp put it away in the 54th. Juliana Boon (five saves) and the Northwestern defense held Cal not only scoreless, but shotless for two whole periods in the ranked matchup. Check out the ‘Cats recap .
On Sunday, the ‘Cats cruised to a 7-0 win over UC Davis to close out their California tour. Next up? A Friday afternoon clash with the Spartans to start conference play.
