Three Big Ten Teams Qualify for NCAA Field Hockey Tournament
Northwestern, Michigan and Maryland begin NCAA Postseason this week
ROSEMONT, Ill. – The Big Ten Conference will send three teams to the 2024 NCAA Division I Field Hockey Championships as the tournament field was announced Sunday evening. Michigan earned an automatic berth while Northwestern and Maryland received at-large berths.
Opening round matches of the NCAA Tournament begin Wednesday (Nov. 13) with First and Second Round games slated for Friday (Nov. 15) and Sunday (Nov. 17) respectively. All games will be streamed on ESPN+.
Northwestern (19-1), which won the Big Ten regular season title, is the No. 2 overall seed and will host the winner of an opening round match between Miami (Ohio) and Vermont on Friday, at 1 p.m. ET. Northwestern is making its 20th NCAA Tournament appearance and hosting a regional at Lakeside Field for the third-straight year.
Michigan (15-4), the Big Ten Tournament Champions, will travel to Evanston, Ill., and take on Virginia (13-4) on Friday at 3:30 p.m. ET, marking the Wolverines’ 20th appearance in the NCAAs.
Maryland (13-6) will meet Duke (12-6) for the second time this season on Friday at 1:30 p.m. ET in Chapel Hill, N.C. The Terrapins, who finished second in the Big Ten standings and reached the Big Ten Tournament semifinals, are making their 36th trip to the NCAAs.
Four of the 18 teams in the bracket will advance to the NCAA Semifinals scheduled for Nov. 22 at Phyllis Ocker Field in Ann Arbor, Mich. The NCAA Final will take place on Nov. 24.
