Iowa and Michigan State Earn First Field Hockey Awards of the Season

Offensive Player of the Week

Emma O’Neill, Michigan State

Sr. – F – Hummelstown, Pa. – Lower Dauphin

  • Scored all three goals in Michigan State’s 3-0 road win at Boston U. on Aug. 25

  • Coming off the bench, spent less than five minutes on the field before netting goals 50 seconds apart in the first period

  • Finished with a .750 shooting percentage (3-for-4) in becoming the first Spartan to record a hat trick since 2016

  • Receives first-ever Big Ten weekly award

  • Last Michigan State Offensive Player of the Week: Kendal Anderson (Sept. 6, 2016)
     

Defensive Player of the Week

Mia Magnotta, Iowa

So. – GK – Forty-Fort, Pa. – Wyoming Seminary

  • Recorded a career-high six saves to lead No. 7 Iowa to a 3-2 overtime win over top-ranked North Carolina on Aug. 27, ending the Tar Heels’ 22-match win streak

  • Played all 60 minutes in notching a 4-0 shutout against No. 12 Wake Forest at the ACC/Big Ten Challenge on Aug. 25

  • Collects first Big Ten weekly honor

  • Last Iowa Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week: Anthe Nijziel (Oct. 31, 2022)
     

Freshman of the Week

Dionne van Aalsum, Iowa

Fr. – M – Castricum, Netherlands – Bonhoeffer College

  • Scored two goals in her collegiate debut, a 4-0 win over No. 12 Wake Forest in Chapel Hill, N.C.

  • Became first Hawkeye to score twice in a season-opening match since 2017 and the first freshman to accomplish that feat since at least 2000

  • Tallied two goals in Iowa’s 3-2 overtime win over No. 1 North Carolina on Aug. 27

  • Earns Big Ten weekly award during first week of collegiate competition

  • Last Iowa Big Ten Freshman of the Week Winner: Anthe Nijziel (Sept. 17, 2018)
