Indiana, Michigan State and Northwestern Earn Field Hockey Honors

ROSEMONT, lll. – The Big Ten Conference has announced its field hockey weekly award winners for games played October 25-27.

Offensive Player of the Week
Maddie Zimmer, Northwestern
Sr. – M – Hershey, Pa. – Hershey

• Eluded three defenders on a lengthy dribble from midfield into the circle, setting up the game-winning goal in Northwestern’s 2-1 overtime win at No. 7 Michigan on Oct. 25
• The play propelled Northwestern to a share of the Big Ten Championship
• Assisted on the game’s first goal at Michigan and followed with a goal and assist versus Michigan State on Oct. 27 as No. 1 Northwestern captured the Big Ten title outright
• The U.S. Olympian receives her first Big Ten Offensive Player accolade
• Last Northwestern Offensive Player of the Week: Ashley Sessa (Oct. 21, 2024)

Defensive Player of the Week
Lyra Gavino, Michigan State
So. – G – New Malden, England – Surbiton

• Made 17 saves against No. 1-ranked Northwestern in a 5-0 loss Sunday in East Lansing
• The saves total was the most by a Big Ten goalkeeper this season, matching a mark Gavino set against Penn State last week
• Turned away 10 shots in Michigan State’s 2-1 overtime win over No. 16 Iowa on Oct. 25
• Receives first career Big Ten weekly award
• Last MSU Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week: Jade Arundell (Sept. 3, 2019)

Freshman of the Week
Sadie Canelli, Indiana
Fr. – G – Boxford, Mass. – Pingree School

• Compiled a 0.86 goals-against average .800 save percentage over the weekend
• Held third-ranked Ohio State to just a goal in 80 minutes of action in a 2-1 shootout loss on Oct. 25; made five saves and turned away five more shots in the shootout
• Helped Indiana to a 2-1 win over No. 7 Michigan on the road Sunday, making three saves in the Hoosiers’ first win against a Top-10 opponent since 2016
• Earns her second Big Ten weekly honor, was named Defensive Player of the Week on Oct. 14, 2024
