NCAA Field Hockey Update: First Round

The NCAA Field Hockey Tournament field was cut in half Friday following First Round action. The Big Ten went 2-2 on the day with Maryland and Northwestern advancing to Sunday's Second Round.

COLLEGE PARK, Md. — Maryland used home field advantage to post a 3-0 win over Old Dominion at the Field Hockey and Lacrosse Complex. Sammy Popper scored two first-half goals on assists from Margot Lawn. 

Old Dominion held a 7-2 shot advantage in the second half but goalkeeper Alyssa Klebasko was up to the task, finishing with six saves in a shutout effort.

Maryland (17-5) will face Virginia (13-6) on Sunday with a trip to the NCAA semifinals on the line.

EVANSTON, Ill. — Northwestern rolled to its 19th-straight win with a 3-0 win over Miami (Ohio) of the Mid-American Conference at Lakeside Field. First years Ilse Tromp and Olivia Bent-Cole scored goals less than two minutes apart in the third quarter as the Wildcats (19-1) peppered 15 shots towards goal.

Northwestern takes on Louisville (15-6) — the only team it has lost to this season — on Sunday afternoon.

Iowa's season came to an end with a 2-1 double overtime loss to Louisville in the second game of Friday's doubleheader in Evanston.

The Hawkeyes (13-6) struck first on Dionne van Aalsum's NCAA-leading 28th goal of the season before Louisville answered early in the third quarter. Aimee Plumb netted the game-winner with 2:23 left in the second overtime.

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — Rutgers was hopeful of playing the entire NCAA Tournamnent at Karen Shelton Stadium but came up short against Harvard, 2-1, on Friday afternoon.

Trailing 2-0 late in the game, Rutgers scored with 3:42 left in regulation on Marique Dieudonne's tally, however the equalizer proved elusive. The Scarlet Knights, who finished with a 16-6 edge in shots, concluded a strong campaign with a 16-4 record.
