Maryland Moves on to NCAA Quarterfinals

Maryland took advantage of its home field to post an NCAA First Round win while Michigan fell on the road as the NCAA Men's Lacrosse Championships began Saturday.
COLLEGE PARK, Md. — Maryland's offense came alive in a 16-8 victory over Princeton at SECU Stadium.
Maryland (9-5) scored 11 first half goals and held Princeton to three goals over the first 30 minutes. Eric Spanos struck for four goals while Eric Malever and Jack Koras registered hat tricks. Defenseman Ajax Zappitello forced three turnovers and specialist Luke Wierman dominated the X by winning 20-of-26 faceoffs.
The No. 7 seed Terps will face No. 2 seed Duke on May 18 in Hempstead, N.Y.
DENVER, Colo. — Michigan fell into an early hole and came up short in its comeback attempt in a 16-11 loss to No. 5 seed Denver at Barton Lacrosse Stadium.
The Pioneers (12-3) jumped out to a 9-1 lead in the first half. The Wolverines (10-7), closed the gap to three with five-straight goals in the third quarter. It was the closest Michigan would get. Justin Tiernan compiled a team-high four goals and Ryan Cohen contributed six points (three goals, three assists).
NCAA First Round action continues Sunday with Johns Hopkins hosting Lehigh at Noon ET and Penn State taking on Georgetown at 2:30 p.m. ET.
