Michigan and Rutgers Garner Weekly Men’s Lacrosse Honors after upsets

Wolverines’ Cohen, Taylor and Van Wees, Scarlet Knights’ Sommer win weekly accolades

ROSEMONT, Ill. – The Big Ten Conference has announced its Men’s Lacrosse Awards for the week of March 18th-25th 2025.  

Offensive Players of the Week 
Ryan Cohen, Michigan 
Senior – Attack – Boca Raton, Fla. – Major: Sport Management 

  • Led Michigan to an upset win over then-No. 1 Maryland with a team-high four points
  • Added a caused turnover and groundball to round out the effort
  • Cohen also tallied his 100th career goal in the game
  • Last Michigan Offensive Player of the Week Award: Michael Boehm (Feb. 20, 2024) 

Defensive Player of the Week 
Kees Van Wees, Michigan 
Senior  – Defense – Ridgefield, Conn. – Major: Economics 

  • Led the defensive effort in Michigan’s upset win over then-No. 1 Maryland
  • Caused a career-high four turnovers and garnered a ground ball Van Wees’ caused turnover in the third overtime led to game-winning goal 40 seconds later
  • Three of his four caused turnovers led to Michigan goals
  • Last Michigan Defensive Player of the Week Award: Pace Billings (Feb. 4, 2025) 

Specialist of the Week 
Hunter Taylor, Michigan 
Junior – Goalie – Rockville, Md. – Major: Business Administration 

  • Made a season-high 13 saves to help Michigan upset then-No.1 Maryland on the road
  • Helped hold Maryland to 9 goals, its second lowest total on the season
  • Made a game saving stop on a fast break that sent the game into the third overtime
  • Logged his fourth double-digit save game of the season
  • Taylor's second Specialist of the Week Award. Last: Feb. 4, 2025 

Freshman of the Week 
Hadyn Sommer, Rutgers 
RS-Freshman – Midfield – Cypress, Texas – Major: Pre-Business 

  • Recorded 3 goals and 1 assist in upset road win over No. 11 John’s Hopkins
  • It was a breakout game for Sommer, who recorded just 2 goals in his first eight collegiate games
  • Had the most goals and points of any Big Ten winning player this week
  • Last Rutgers Freshman of the Week Award: JJ Aiello (Feb. 25, 2025)
