Four Big Ten Men's Lacrosse Teams to Compete in the NCAA Tournament

ROSEMONT, Ill. –
For just the second time in Big Ten history, four teams have been selected for the 2023 NCAA Mens Lacrosse Tournament. 

The inclusion of Johns Hopkins, Maryland, Michigan, and Penn State matches the 2017 season, when Maryland and Ohio State met in the National Championship game. 

Three of the four Big Ten teams will host opening round games on Saturday, May 13 or Sunday, May 14, with second round match-ups slated for May 20-21. Quarterfinal winners will advance to the Final Four, scheduled for May 27 at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia. The National Championship will be contested on Monday, May 29 in Philadelphia.

The tournament’s first round and quarterfinals will be televised on ESPN+, with quarterfinal and semifinal rounds moving to ESPNU. ESPN will broadcast the title game at 1 p.m. ET on Memorial Day.

Johns Hopkins (11-5, 4-1 Big Ten) returns to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2019 and will host America East champion Bryant on Sunday at 12 Noon ET. With a first-round win, the Blue Jays, the tournament’s No. 6 overall seed, will meet No. 3 overall seed Notre Dame or Utah in the quarterfinals.

Maryland (10-5, 3-2) was named the tournament’s No. 4 overall seed will host Patriot League champion Army on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. ET. The defending NCAA champion Terrapins will make their 20th consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance and 45th total appearance.  With a win, Maryland will meet either Penn State or Princeton in a quarterfinal match-up on Sunday.

Michigan (9-6, 2-3) earned the Big Ten’s automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament after winning the program’s first Big Ten Tournament title on Saturday with a 14-5 win over Maryland. The only Big Ten team to open tournament play on the road, the Wolverines will visit Cornell at 2:30 p.m. ET on Sunday in Ithaca, N.Y. The winner will meet either overall No. 1 seed Duke or the winner of Wednesday’s opening round game between Delaware and Marist. 

Penn State (9-4, 4-1) will make its sixth tournament appearance and first since 2019 when it welcomes Ivy League champion Princeton to Happy Valley on Sunday at 7:30 p.m. ET. TWith a first-round victory, the No. 5 seeded Nittany Lions will advance to a quarterfinal meeting with Maryland or Army on Sunday.
