EUGENE, Ore. – The Big Ten crowned three NCAA Champions on Wednesday to open the 2026 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships hosted at the historic Hayward Field.

In the first event of the day, Minnesota’s Angelos Mantzouranis claimed the hammer throw with a mark of 75.78m. This marks the second year in a row that a Golden Gopher has won the men’s hammer throw, as Kostas Zaltos held the crown last year.

Oregon’s Ben Smith, a redshirt freshman, became the third ever Duck to win the NCAA  shot put title and the first since 1982. Smith’s winning mark was 21.04m, and he remained over the 20-meter mark in the entirety of the 2026 outdoor season.

Smith highlighted what was a deep roster of Big Ten throwers this year. On the podium, every spot was represented by a Big Ten thrower except for second place.

To close out the day, Nebraska’s pole vaulter Dyson Wicker, who was a home crowd favorite at the Big Ten Championships in Lincoln, continued his hot streak and earned the NCAA title with a clearance of 5.85m.

With the help of Wicker, the Huskers hold a day one lead on the men’s side with 28 points. Oregon sits just behind at second with 18 points, and Minnesota is tied for fourth.

17 Big Ten student-athletes and four relay teams advanced to the finals on Friday evening, giving the conference 21 additional chances to score on the men’s side which will begin with the discus throw at 2:15 p.m. PT.
