Four Claim Individual Titles

Four Big Ten women golfers earned individual honors at tournaments in Minnesota, Pennsylvania, and Texas this week.  

Xing wins in collegiate debut 

UCLA freshman Michelle Xing earned the individual medal in her first collegiate tournament, firing a nine-under par at the ANNIKA Intercollegiate in Minnesota to win the  Big Ten Golfer of the Week.  Xing showed the poise of a veteran in the clutch, posting a seven-under par 65 in the final round on Wednesday, including a stretch of seven birdies in eight holes. The final-round 65 score marked the lowest round ever by a Bruin in her first collegiate tournament. As a team, the Bruins finished in sixth place. USC finished as the runner-up.  More from UCLA .  

Koshko also wins in debut tournament 

Michelle Xing wasn’t the only freshman making noise on the links this week. Penn State freshman and State College native Maddie Koshko delivered a victory in familiar surroundings at the Happy Valley Invitational this week. The model of consistency, Koshko shot back-to-back four-under 68s, concluding the 36-hole tournament with an eight-under performance that was good enough to win by four strokes over Maryland’s Noa Terroba Toro. Koshko collected nine birdies and bogeyed just once during the two-day affair.  Read more .  

Babineaux, Vargas share title in Texas 

Nebraska sophomore Kaleigh Babineaux and Illinois junior Sofia Vargas both shot 10-under par to share the individual title as part of a five-way tie at The Bruzzy in Trophy Club, Texas. Babineaux shot a final-round 70 (-2) to earn her first title and the best tournament score of her college career. Vargas matched Babineaux with a two-under par final round to collect her second career tournament crown. See the  Huskers’  and  Illini’s  recaps.
