Big Ten Announces 2023 Women's Lacrosse All-Conference Teams

ROSEMONT, Ill. — The Big Ten Conference announced its 2023 women’s lacrosse all-conference teams Wednesday morning, following a vote by the conference’s seven head coaches. That same group will also be selecting the Big Ten’s individual award recipients, with that announcement to come next week.
Big Ten champion Northwestern led the conference with eight All-Big Ten honorees, including five on the First Team. Among them were a pair of unanimous selections – senior attacker Erin Coykendall and graduate student attacker Izzy Scane. Fellow attacker Hailey Rhatigan, midfielder Samantha Smith and defender Samantha White were also named to the First Team.
Seven players from Maryland received All-Big Ten accolades, including unanimous selection senior midfielder Shaylan Ahearn. The senior was joined on the First Team by attacker Eloise Clevenger, defenders Abby Bosco, and goaltender Emily Sterling.
Michigan had five three players named to the First Team, including attacker Jill Smith, midfielder Erin Garvey, and defender Maddie Burns.
Completing the First Team were a pair of players from Penn State and Rutgers. The Nittany Lions junior Kristin O’Neill was a unanimous selection in the midfield, while Rutgers senior Meghan Ball was a unanimous selection as a defender. Penn State defender Ellie Hollin and Scarlet Knights midfielder Cassidy Spilis were also named to the First Team.
The Big Ten also recognized seven Sportsmanship Award recipients in the sport of women’s lacrosse on Wednesday, one from each conference school. The student-athletes chosen are individuals who have distinguished themselves through sportsmanship and ethical behavior. These student-athletes must also be in good academic standing and have demonstrated good citizenship outside of the sports-competition setting.
