Michigan Wins 2023 Big Ten Rowing Championship

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The Michigan Wolverines won the 2023 Big Ten Conference Rowing Championship on Sunday, after winning three races and finishing second in two others at Eagle Creek Park and the Indianapolis Center in Indianapolis, Ind.
The Wolverines totaled 174 points to edge Ohio State by five points to win its eight Big Ten title and third since 2019.
The championship came down to the final race, the First Varsity Eight (1V8). Ohio State held a slim lead heading into the day’s final event and needed to finish one spot behind Michigan to win the championship. While Michigan cruised to a victory, posting a time of 6:21.292 over the 2,000-meter course, the drama came in the race for second place.
Ohio State and Indiana went back and forth through the entire course, before the Hoosiers claimed second place by less than 0.3 seconds, securing the title for Michigan and a second place finish for the Hoosiers.
The Wolverines also earned victories in the Second Novice Eights (2N8) in 6:54.903 and the First Varsity Fours (1V4) in 7:18.086. Ohio State won the Novice Eights (1N8) in 6:47.566, Second Varsity Fours (2V4) in 7:25.276 and Second Varsity Eights (2V8) in 6:34.230.
Rutgers also earned gold in the Third Varsity Fours (3V4) with a time of 7:33.440.
The Big Ten Network will debut linear coverage of the 2023 Big Ten Rowing Championships at 11 a.m. (ET) next Saturday (May 20), with coverage also available on the FOX Sports app.
With Sunday’s win, Michigan earns the conference’s automatic berth to the 2023 NCAA Championships, which will take place May 26-28 at the Camden Country Boathouse in Camden, N.J. The full field for this year’s NCAA Championships will be announced at 6:30 p.m. (ET) Tuesday on NCAA.com.
