Washington senior Aisha Rocek repeated as the Big Ten Athlete of the Year, while teammate Jayna Palmer was chosen as the Big Ten Freshman of the Year. Husky head coach Yasmin Farooq was named Big Ten Coach of the Year.Rocek, hailing from Como, Italy, is only the second rower in Big Ten history to earn athlete of the year laurels in consecutive years, joining Kate Johnson (Michigan, 2000-01). The two-time first team All-Big Ten performer helped lead the Huskies to a gold medal in the I Eights and team title at the 2026 Big Ten Rowing Championships presented by Allstate.Palmer is the first rower from Washington’s program to be selected as the Big Ten Freshman of the Year. The Truckee, Calif., native was a member of the I Eights that took home first place at the conference championships. She also earned a spot on the Big Ten’s All-Freshman Team.Farooq, who is in her 10th season at the helm, is the first Washington head coach to garner Big Ten Coach of the Year recognition. Big Ten Conference Announces 2026 Rowing Individual Awards

<div class="payload-richtext">ROSEMONT, Ill. – The Big Ten had four teams selected to participate in the 2026 NCAA Rowing Championships, the organization announced Tuesday. For the second time in as many years, Washington earned the conference’s automatic qualification after winning the 2026 Big Ten Rowing Championships presented by Allstate, while Michigan, Ohio State and Rutgers were at-large selections for the 22-team regatta. The championships will be held May 29-31 at Lake Lanier Olympic Park in Gainesville, Ga., and will be covered live on NCAA.com.For the fourth year in a row, the Big Ten captured four bids, the most since five teams competed in the 2019 NCAA Championships.Teams participating in the NCAA Championships are required to field two boats of eight rowers (I Eights and II Eights) and one boat of four rowers (Fours), with all 22 boats being seeded into four heats.Washington continues its streak with its 29th straight appearance, having competed in every championship regatta in the NCAA’s history of the event. The Huskies, who last won a national championship in 2019, are seeking their sixth title and have earned the No. 9 seed in the I Eights, No. 5 seed in the II Eights and No. 3 seed in the Fours.Michigan is set to embark on its 25th overall and 18th consecutive postseason trip. The Wolverines are seeded 17th in the I Eights, 13th in the II Eights and 15th in the Fours. Michigan’s best NCAA finish as a program was a second-place showing in 2012.Ohio State will make its 25th showing in the NCAA Championships. The Buckeyes have competed in all but one NCAA regatta held since 2000 and own seven individual boat titles. The three-time national champions (2013, 2014, 2015) are the No. 15 seed in the I Eights, No. 16 seed in the II Eights and No. 14 seed in the Fours.  Rutgers is back in the NCAA Championships for the seventh year in a row. The Scarlet Knights, who came in second at the Big Ten Championships, are seeded 12th in both the I Eights and II Eights and are fourth in the Fours for the NCAA competition.</div>

The Huskies clocked first-place finishes in six of the seven Grand Finals at Eagle Creek Park in Indianapolis to earn their second title in as many years.Washington beat out Rutgers (322 points) and Ohio State (262 points) to finish atop the podium. Michigan placed fourth behind 255 points while UCLA rounded out the top five with 227 points.With Sunday’s victory, Washington earns the conference’s automatic berth into the 2026 NCAA Rowing Championships, which take place May 29-31 at Lake Lanier Olympic Park in Gainesville, Ga. The full field of this year’s NCAA Championships will be announced on Tuesday, May 19 at 5 p.m. ET via a streamed selection show on NCAA.com.<div class="lexical-table-container">

2026 CRCA Tabs Seven Big Ten Programs in Preseason Poll

 </a> urging the NCAA to continue pushing for limitations or the outright elimination of proposition (“prop”) betting involving individual student-athletes competing in college athletics. The letter reinforces the Big Ten Conference’s unwavering commitment to protecting the well-being and safety of student-athletes across all 18 Big Ten campuses, and the integrity of intercollegiate athletics.“The Big Ten Conference is proud to support our student-athletes in calling for the restriction or elimination of individual proposition wagers on college athletics,” said Big Ten Conference Commissioner Tony Petitti.  >Potentially jeopardizing the integrity of athletic competition</li></ul>“While we understand that sports betting is becoming increasingly more common across the country and allows for states to generate increased tax revenue, prop betting represents unique risks at the college level,” the Big Ten Conference Student-Athlete Issues Commission wrote. “We believe protecting student-athletes must be a priority. Limiting or eliminating prop betting on college athletics would be a meaningful step toward reducing harassment, protecting mental well-being, and preserving the integrity of college competition.”The Big Ten Conference SAIC was founded in 1994. SAIC members take an active role in monthly meetings discussing the issues most important to Big Ten Conference student-athletes and highlighting ongoing initiatives on their respective campuses.
