ROSEMONT, Ill. - The Big Ten Conference today officially admitted the University of Oregon, UCLA, USC and the University of Washington, bringing the total number of member institutions to 18. A little more than a year later, on August 4, 2023, the COP/C voted unanimously once more to admit the University of Oregon and the University of Washington, with all four schools joining the Conference on August 2, 2024.Oregon, UCLA, USC and Washington are all members of the Association of American Universities, an organization of American research institutions devoted to maintaining a strong system of academic research and education. Today, they also become members of the Big Ten Academic Alliance, where Big Ten institutions lead the nation with more than 75,000 instructional staff, 810,000 students, $17.4 billion in annual research expenditures, and 145 million library volumes, representing 25 percent of all print titles in North America. University of Oregon, UCLA, USC and University of Washington Officially Join Big Ten Conference

ROSEMONT, Ill. – The Big Ten Conference announced its annual postgraduate scholarship recipients on Wednesday, recognizing two student-athletes from each of the 14 Big Ten member institutions who plan to continue their education at a graduate degree program. These honorees will be awarded a $7,500 scholarship, based primarily on academic achievements. This year’s recipients, who represent 15 different sports, will continue their education in a variety of different disciplines. Each Big Ten institution developed its own on-campus selection process when awarding the scholarships. Student-athletes must have maintained at least a 3.2 grade-point average (GPA), demonstrated leadership qualities, served as an excellent role model and intended to continue their academic work beyond their baccalaureate degree at a graduate degree program. The Big Ten Postgraduate Scholarship will be used to pay expenses of the student’s postgraduate education to include such related activities as research and teaching, as well as other expenses such as tuition, fees, room and board, required course-related supplies and books. To retain the scholarship, the recipient must be accepted into a full-time graduate degree program within three years from the fall semester after selection. Big Ten Conference Announces 2024 Postgraduate Scholarship Recipients

ROSEMONT, Ill. — The Big Ten Conference is celebrating its 110th class of recipients who earned the Big Ten Medal of Honor from their respective institutions during the 2023-24 academic year. Established in 1915, the Big Ten Medal of Honor is the conference’s most prestigious award. It was the first award in intercollegiate athletics to demonstrate support for the educational emphasis placed on athletics. The Big Ten Medal of Honor is awarded to one male and one female student-athlete from the graduating class of each member institution who has demonstrated excellence on and off the field throughout their collegiate career. This year’s class comprised student-athletes from 17 sports. Big Ten schools currently feature more than 9,800 student-athletes, but only 28 earn the award on an annual basis. Since the Big Ten Medal of Honor was first presented more than a century ago, just over 1,650 student-athletes have earned this unique distinction. Big Ten Recognizes 110th Medal of Honor Class

INDIANAPOLIS – Ashley Harlock of Michigan State University and Trent DiCicco of the Ohio State University have been selected as this year’s Wayne Duke Postgraduate Award recipients. All 14 Big Ten Conference member institutions were asked to nominate one female and one male student-athlete for the 2024 school year. The two students selected were each awarded a $10,000 scholarship for their achievements in academics, athletics, extracurricular activities, and leadership.Harlock becomes the third Spartan student-athlete to receive the Wayne Duke Postgraduate award, joining swimmer Scott Piper (2020) and gymnast Lea Mitchell (2021). DiCicco joins the trio of swimmer Chelsea Davis (2010), soccer player Lindsay Agnew (2017), and thrower Sade Olatoye (2020) as Buckeyes to earn the honor in its 17-year history.In recognition of the Big Ten Conference's leadership in fully integrating athletics into the academic mission of its member institutions, the Indianapolis Big Ten Community Partnership initiated the Wayne Duke Postgraduate Award in 2008. During the past 17 years, the award has contributed nearly $300,000 in scholarships.The award is made possible by donations from local corporations and individuals supporting intercollegiate athletics. The Indianapolis Big Ten Community Partnership is comprised of the State of Indiana, the City of Indianapolis, Indiana Sports Corp, Pacers Sports &amp; Entertainment, and Visit Indy.A four-year letterwinner on the Michigan State field hockey team, Harlock appeared in all 65 games during her career, including 40 starts, totaling 13 points on three goals and seven assists. Harlock’s leadership extends well beyond her position as a three-year team captain, as she served as President of the Michigan State Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), a leadership committee organized to provide insight into the student-athlete experience, and represented the university on the conference and national levels.Harlock graduated from Michigan State’s Lyman Briggs Honors College with a 4.0 grade-point average, double majoring in human biology and neuroscience with a concentration in behavioral neuroscience. During her time at Michigan State, Harlock has participated in research in the Physics, Psychology, and Physiology Departments and presented research at the 2023 Society for Neuroscience Annual Meeting.In addition to her athletic and academic pursuits, Harlock is active in a variety of community service activities, including blood and bone marrow drives and food and clothing drives. She is also an accomplished singer and guitarist, who recorded four original songs for a CD with Nashville producer Matt Wilder.DiCicco was a four-year member and a two-year captain of the Ohio State men’s lacrosse team, who accumulated 17 points on 10 goals and seven assists, 88 ground balls, and 10 caused turnovers in his 47 appearances in the Scarlett and Gray. DiCicco was also a member of Team Canada, winning a silver medal at the Under-21 World Championships in Limerick, Ireland in 2022.A two-time Big Ten Distinguished Scholar, DiCicco majored in mechanical engineering with a minor in robotics and autonomous systems, posting a 3.94 overall grade-point average. DiCicco is also participating in research projects focusing on human movement biomechanics applied to law enforcement and athletes and a multidisciplinary project related to optimizing human performance, injury prevention, and rapid rehabilitation.Outside of classwork, research, and lacrosse, DiCicco, who also co-founded and co-owns a small, vintage-inspired fashion brand called Modern Crown, volunteers at the Second and Seven Reading Foundation and Dream Centre Food Service.“Indiana Sports Corp is humbled to have the opportunity to present the Wayne Duke Postgraduate Award to these outstanding student-athletes,” said Indiana Sports Corp President Patrick Talty. “Both of the honorees have demonstrated impressive leadership skills, academic and athletic performance, and serve as role models for their communities.”The Wayne Duke Postgraduate Award is named for the late Big Ten Conference commissioner who served from 1971 to 1989. Big Ten Men's Lacrosse Players Named to All-America Squads

The game was delayed by two hours due to thunderstorms.The Terrapins scored twice in the opening minutes and the game was tied 3-3 with five minutes left in the first period when the Irish went on a 9-1 run to close the first half. Maryland was held to one goal in the second half as Notre Dame captured its second-straight NCAA title. Notre Dame (16-1) held a slight edge in shots on goal, 25-21. Maryland's Daniel Kelly scored two goals and was named to the NCAA All-Tournament Team along with faceoff specialist Luke Wierman and defender Ajax Zappitello. Wierman won 17-of-24 faceoffs (70.8 percent) and collected a team-best six ground balls while Zappitello held Notre Dame’s Pat Kavanagh goalless for the first time this season. Kavanagh did finish with six assists and brother Chris Kavanagh led ND with five goals.Maryland (11-6) reached the NCAA Final with wins over Top-10 opponents Princeton, Duke and Virginia. The Terrapins made their 17th appearance in an NCAA Final, which ranks second-best all-time.

Maryland trailed for only five minutes on Saturday, building a 4-1 lead after 15 minutes and taking a four-goal advantage into halftime. Maryland held fifth-ranked Virginia to its lowest goal total of the season, avenging a loss to the Cavaliers earlier in the season. All-Big Ten Second Team selection Luke Wierman dominated the X, winning 15-of-22 faceoffs (68.1 percent) and gathering 10 ground balls. He also executed a pinch-and-pop on a first-quarter goal. NCAA and Autonomy Conferences Agree on Settlement

The third-ranked Blue Jays (11-5) built a 4-0 advantage in the first quarter and held a 10-7 lead late in the third quarter before being held scoreless for the final 23 minutes of action. JHU goalie Chayse Ierland made 15 saves while offensively Jacob Angelus recorded six points on five assists, Garrett Degnon contributed five points (three goals, two assists) and Russell Melendez netted four goals. Fifth-ranked Virginia (12-5) trailed the entire afternoon until Connor Shellengberger scored the game-winner with 1:40 left in the sixth period. Virginia will meet Maryland in the NCAA Semifinals on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. on ESPN2.

Johns Hopkins Suffers NCAA Quarterfinal Loss in Double Overtime

Photo by Mackenzie Miles/Maryland Athletics HEAMPSTEAD, N.Y. — Maryland delivered in crunch time to earn a trip to NCAA Championship Weekend with a 14-11 win over Duke in an NCAA Men's Lacrosse Quarterfinal match held Saturday at Shuart Stadium.The 10th-ranked Terrapins (10-5) trailed 9-7 entering the fourth quarter before exploding for seven goals to pull out the win against the second-ranked Blue Devils (13-6). Daniel Maltz scored a pair of goals with five minutes left in regulation to break an 11-11 tie as Maryland made the most of its first lead of the game. Maryland continues its title quest next Saturday, meeting the winner of Sunday's Johns Hopkins-Virginia game.

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Penn State's season came to an end with a 12-9 loss to Georgetown at Cooper Field Sunday afternoon. Penn State (11-5) led 9-7 after 45 minutes but were held scoreless in the fourth quarter. Matt Traynor registered a hat trick and a team-high 11 shots for the Nittany Lions.

Johns Hopkins Earns Spot in NCAA Quarterfinals

Maryland (9-5) scored 11 first half goals and held Princeton to three goals over the first 30 minutes. Eric Spanos struck for four goals while Eric Malever and Jack Koras registered hat tricks. Defenseman Ajax Zappitello forced three turnovers and specialist Luke Wierman dominated the X by winning 20-of-26 faceoffs. The No. 7 seed Terps will face No. 2 seed Duke on May 18 in Hempstead, N.Y. DENVER, Colo. — Michigan fell into an early hole and came up short in its comeback attempt in a 16-11 loss to No. 5 seed Denver at Barton Lacrosse Stadium. The Pioneers (12-3) jumped out to a 9-1 lead in the first half. The Wolverines (10-7), closed the gap to three with five-straight goals in the third quarter. It was the closest Michigan would get. Justin Tiernan compiled a team-high four goals and Ryan Cohen contributed six points (three goals, three assists). NCAA First Round action continues Sunday with Johns Hopkins hosting Lehigh at Noon ET and Penn State taking on Georgetown at 2:30 p.m. ET.

Maryland Moves on to NCAA Quarterfinals

ROSEMONT, Ill. – Eleven players from the Big Ten Conference were selected at the 2024 Premier Lacrosse League Draft, held May 7 in Bristol, Conn. Maryland’s Ajax Zappitello, the 2024 Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year, was chosen third overall by the Maryland Whipsnakes while Rutgers midfielder Shane Knobloch, a 2024 Big Ten First Team selection, was selected fourth overall by the Carolina Chaos. Photo by Kirk IrwinCOLUMBUS, Ohio – No. 4 seed Michigan started out of the gates quickly and didn’t look back in recording a 16-4 victory over third seed Penn State to win the 2024 Big Ten Men’s Lacrosse Tournament Championship Saturday evening at the Ohio State Lacrosse Stadium. Michigan receives the Big Ten’s automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament. Lightning caused the game to be delayed by 52 minutes, but Michigan wasted little time getting on the board, scoring six seconds into the contest for the quickest goal in tournament history. The Wolverines (10-6) scored two more times in the opening five minutes and built a 6-1 cushion after one quarter of action. Michigan took a 9-3 lead into halftime and outscored Penn State, 6-0, in the third quarter to secure its second-straight tournament title. Ryan Cohen produced a record seven assists while Justin Tiernan finished with five goals. Michael Boehm earned the tournament’s Most Outstanding Player Award after compiling nine goals and 14 points in three games. Michigan placed five players on the all-tournament team while Penn State (11-4) earned three selections. Michigan Wins Big Ten Men’s Lacrosse Tournament Title

The No. 4 seed Wolverines (9-6) posted a 10-7 come-from-behind win over top seed Johns Hopkins (10-4) in the first semifinal at the Ohio State Lacrosse Stadium. The Blue Jays opened a 6-1 lead early in the second period, but were held to one goal the rest of the way. By going on a 9-1 run, Michigan recorded the largest comeback in Big Ten Tournament history. Michigan's Michael Boehm tallied a game-high five goals as part of a six-point night while Garrett Degnon registered a hat trick for Johns Hopkins. Michigan twice converted on the man-up and finished with a 23-15 advantage in shots on goal. No. 3 seed Penn State jumped to an early lead and never trailed in registering a 19-9 victory over No. 2 seed Maryland. In the process, Penn State set a tournament record for most goals in a game. The Nittany Lions (11-3) opened a 7-1 lead in the second period and took an 11-3 lead into halftime. Maryland (8-5) scored four goals within a span of 2 minutes, 47 seconds in the third quarter to narrow the gap to five goals, but couldn't draw any closer. Penn State's Matt Traynor recorded a six-point night behind five goals while teammates TJ Malone and Mac Costin provided three goals. Maryland received two goals apiece from Eric Spanos and Daniel Maltz. Michigan and Penn State meet at 8 p.m. ET Saturday in the Big Ten Championship Game. Both programs are looking for their second titles.

PSU scored four goals in the second period to open a three goal lead, then held Rutgers (7-8) to just three second-half goals.
